Our first night in the house is odd. I’m aware of each creak and groan, every ghost of a footstep. It makes me uneasy but after the others are in bed, I take a lamp and go to the gallery. Sitting on the floor, I stare up at the painting, watching the faces flicker in the shadows. Emptiness surrounds me and I reach toward the magic; if I can’t see past it, at least I may be able to discern who put it in place. It’s cold, distant, a haze... a spell that doesn’t like my intrusion. It hisses a soft warning. I feel Viktor in it, remnants of his consciousness stirring as I move further into its memories. I hear screams and shapes take form, echoes of the mind that cast the magic, obscured but panicked. Footsteps and shouts tremble in the air.

What have you done?

It whispers in the darkness, haunted, broken.
